In eastern Queensland, the Burdekin River meanders through a wide floodplain towards its mouth near the Great Barrier Reef. Seasonal flooding deposits large volumes of sand, creating the dramatic, clearly defined floodplain visible in this image. The sugar cane fields surrounding the river are irrigated year-round with water drawn from an extensive underground aquifer system. Image by Planet Labs.
