Cumberland Street, The Rocks. During the course of the 19th century the social diversity of the original close settlement around the port of Sydney was lost.     The affluent residents vacated their large houses on the ridge for the growing suburbs and The Rocks became an area of seamen and immigrants, the working class and the poor. Many outsiders considered the area still tainted by the convict stain.
