Spotted Gum House | residential design

Spotted Gum House is an alteration and addition to an existing interwar bungalow nestled amongst the mature, leafy green trees of Sydney’s North Shore neighbourhood of Artarmon. While respecting the suburban landscape and heritage conservation area we have restored the street-facing façade while exploring a hidden, modern sculptural annexe at the rear.

Principal Jeremy Bull writes, "We had always intended to rebuild the garage of this interwar cottage, but given various constraints it needed to be retained. The end resolution was a very delicate touch between the new curved structural wall of the house and the external gutter of the garage. What is difficult to see here, is that the curved wall houses a drainage detail which coordinates the garage and the house in a little dance of rain water."

Spotted Gum House | RESIDENTIAL | Principal Jeremy Bull writes, "This residence has a very high ceiling height, around four meters. A stair landing return to the upper level creates a niche which in this view you can see as a kitchen vestibule in Walnut timber. The project was very ‘neat’ for us as far as our projects go. It had lots of straight lines, a cleanliness to the detailing which was inspired from mid century Australian architecture."

The upper level of Spotted Gum House is conceived as a timber box. It is deliberately varied from the masonry of the lower floor; more tactile and very expressive. The ceiling joists are aligned to the joinery door handles, and this moment of reflection at the bathroom opening helps multiply that sense. Our talented renderer Ludi Braga produced around a dozen samples of limewash before we selected the perfect hue for this space. We couldn't be more thrilled with how it all came together".

Spotted Gum House | RESIDENTIAL | "In this instance, a framed cabinet built within a recess creates a moment of interest and pause within a masonry wall. Above this niche and concealed behind cabinetry is the stair landing from the master suite - it creates the volume of this space below it and informs the scale of the niche itself,"- Principal Jeremy Bull

Spotted Gum House | RESIDENTIAL | "The master suite at Spotted Gum House is structurally very simple whilst being materially very present. Tones of timber and linen within a flush set curtain pelmet to make the room feel very intimate, while the timber ceiling joists and spotted gum doors are quite precisely detailed and perfectly aligned," - Practice Manager Jeremy Bull.

Spotted Gum House | Our Principal Jeremy Bull says "The master suite at Spotted Gum House is structurally very simple whilst being materially very present. Tones of timber and linen within a flush set curtain pelmet to make the room feel very intimate, while the timber ceiling joists and spotted gum doors are precisely detailed and perfectly aligned. We ensured the door sills and heads were concealed so that the room feels ‘weightless’ and it becomes a beautiful gallery for rest."

Spotted Gum House | RESIDENTIAL | Paying homage to another of your favourite residential projects. This corner of the kitchen features Liberty Grey honed Dolomite stone from SNB Stone with walnut timber joinery. The joinery, stone splash back and bench top run the full length of kitchen, reflecting the straight lines and restrained detailing found throughout this home inspired by mid-century Australian architecture.

Our talented renderer Ludi Braga produced around a dozen samples of limewash before our team selected one perfect hue for this space. The tannins from the ceiling pine take around two weeks to finally reveal themselves through the limewash and leave a gentle, almost pink grey timber tone.

Spotted Gum | RESIDENTIAL | Marketing Director Tess Glasson says, "Each year we're often asked by media what trends we think will be seen. It’s always an interesting opportunity for us to reflect on the year that was; what we've seen in the zeitgeist generally and also what our team has been inspired by. It's also not an easy question to answer. We don’t follow ‘trends’ or have a specific style or aesthetic. Our work is more of an ideology."

Spotted Gum House | RESIDENTIAL | The huge double glazed sliding doors each weighed around 500kg and slide discretely into the wall pocket shown here. The doors enable a huge South facing opening to the garden which is a key feature of the home. This made for a more generous geometry and helped to deal with the quirk of its connection to the old carport. You can see we also extended this wall out beyond the eave to hold a little copper drainage detail which was something of a reference to Italian Architect Carlo Scarpa.
