Working in Australia

10 years ago I moved Down Under from Luton, UK. I have captured a few snippets of life in Australia. Where Australians live, work and play

FIFO stands for Fly In Fly Out. Workers fly to the mine and stay on site for 1 or two weeks, working 12 hour shifts each day. This mine worker has their washed work shirts hanging out to dry at the remote mine site on the Pilbara. This cabin is on the edge of the village. Over the horizon is thousands of miles of arid bush. They say that iron ore miners have red dirt in their veins. One thing is for sure, working in the Pilbara leaves an imprint that you will never forget

This is the airport for one of the iron ore mine sites in north west Australia. Being onboard a tiny prop plane meant I could get a pilots view of the landing. There was no in flight service, or movie but that didn't matter. The Pilbara landscape is covered in rich red soil and the parched ground was interwoven with dirt tracks from prospectors searching for minerals in the wild landscape.

When miners hang up their boots, this is exactly what they do. A gum tree in the iron ore mining village is filled with old work boots that are hurled into the tree by those finishing on the minesite.
