This is where “higher function” tasks are processed. It’s only natural then, that these tasks become more difficult to perform when this region of the brain has been compromised.

Excessive amounts of stress strengthens the PRIMITIVE parts of our brain to take action, causing the prefrontal cortex to effectively shut down. In a fight or flight situation this is an effective survival mechanism as usually there is very little time to ponder and analyse the situation. But that’s not really what we need on a day to day basis! Our lives are stressed without the imminent threat of danger.
