Annette's class demonstrations

Annette is an Artist and Teacher. This board displays paintings/drawings and artwork completed within the context of my teaching classes. I hope it helps my students to keep a record of what we have been doing and the principles and techniques covered.

Streetscape - Rome, 2015 by Annette Raff, Watercolour on Arches 640gsm cold pressed, (in the style of 'Alvaro') This was a demonstration painting done in the Broadbeach watercolour class on Wednesday 14th April 2015. One of my own photos from travel in 2003 was the inspiration. We began with a loose sky and street wash and proceeded to paint a little of the dark sides with very thick paint, taking it right down to the bottom of the page while leaving some soft lights in the centre area.

This is a pencil drawing with an overlay of wash painted in 'Quink' ink. This was a class demonstration at the Broadbeach RQAS and it is just A5 in size (very small). Our focus was on 'value' and this is why we kept it monochrome.

Step 1 & 2: 'Top/Down' approach using tonal value Thursday Hollywell Class. The whitest lights were determined and marked with a pencil grid so as I didn't accidentally paint over them. Then the next darkest values were determined and a wash of this value was applied to the entire drawing, even the background. Once this wash was dry the next darkest value was determined and mixed and applied to everything except the first two values and 'so on'.

Step 3 & 4 of the Top-down tonal layering approach using French Ultramarine and Burnt Sienna to paint the mid and mid dark value shapes ...! Notice it's not what you paint, but what you don't paint that creates the illusion of a shiny surface. Next week the final dark will be added with a little 'tweaking'. Stay tuned ...!

Annette Raff, "Draped in Sunlight", 2015. Watercolour on Cotmans Paper, 19 x 29cm. http://www.watercolourlessonsonline.com/ Next step of the value study painted at the RQAS Thursday class. There are limitations to the amount of layering that the Cotman paper will stand up to. This painting is almost finished.

Painting by Annette Raff (in progress). After the 1st wash had dried I painted a 2nd wash, but skipped around the absolute whites and the lightest values. When this third wash was completely dry I did the same with a 4th wash. At this stage there are 4 values. I have yet to apply a 5th and maybe a 6th wash. My goal was to describe the form in as "few" values as possible. In this way the form is simplified ... as in the"less is best approach", leaving a little mystery for the viewer!

Abstract painting doesn't necessarily mean splashing paint around without planning. This is what it's best known for, but is not the only way to paint in an abstract manner. Abstract paintings can still be planned, painted carefully or be detailed. Any medium can be used, pale, dark, monochrome or colour, soft or hard edged, textured or not, etc. My painting was done in deliberate layers. The process was carefully executed but the result is still abstract.

Nude in 5 Values. The first stage of a demonstration "simplifying with light and shadow" from Wed RQAS Class. I firstly planned where my lightest values would be. These were areas where the figure was directly lit by sunlight coming through a nearby window. These shapes would be reserved as the white of the paper. I then painted a wet into wet light value wash consisting of greens and reds (left over in my palette) over "everything" that wasn't directly lit by the sunlight.
