Bong Bong St, Bowral – 1900. We can still see many of these Victorian buildings today. The earlier timber structures (and many of the Victorian era verandas) are now gone.

Oldbury Farm, Sutton Forest - Australian Georgian Architecture
Oldbury Farm at Sutton Forest today. Note the small windows, heavy masonry and entry porch. All classic Georgian features. The Briar’s Inn at Burradoo also shares these features. No accommodations have been made for the Australian climate (yet!)

History of Architecture in the Southern Highlands - Grand Hotel, Bowral
Bowral’s Grand Hotel, Bowral – Originally constructed in 1888. Partial restoration and reconstruction was done in 1990. Sadly, the verandahs which gave this building a clear rhythm and point of entry, were not reinstated.

History of Architecture in the Southern Highlands - Modernisation of Victorian Verandas in Moss Vale
Shopfront on Argyle St, Moss Vale before and after verandah removal. Note the original doors upstairs remain, though there is now no place to access. The original verandahs on much of the streets stretched right across to the kerb, providing shade and protection from rain.

Family Tree of Australian Building Materials
Over time the early bark huts made way for timber or stone cottages. Bark roofs were removed and replaced with wooden shingles. These were later roofed over with corrugated iron. We can construct an entire ‘family tree’ of Australian building materials over time. As industry (like Brickworks in Bowral and the Ironworks in Mittagong) took over, so did these more processed building products. Today, there are so many innovative options available, it would be impossible to list them all.
