‘Grenade girl’ by Kathrin Longhurst. Finalist Sulman Prize 2012, Art Gallery NSW. Longhurst grew up behind the Berlin Wall and was exposed to art designed to indoctrinate the viewer with communist ideology. In questioning the propaganda of these paintings, she wishes to portray the people of her youth, claiming ‘they were beautiful but were painted grey by the geographical politics of the day.’ Reminded me of Tamara de Lempicka's work.
