Opal occurs in the desert sandstones within 40 meters of the ground surface. Opal mining is limited to the first defined horizontal levels pictured. It is an environmentally sound practice with little if any impact on ground water or any hazardous waste. Often in arid areas where Opal mining occurs more vibrant vegetation occurs after excavation. Resulting water catchments can have a positive grazing and wild life outcome also. https://www.facebook.com/opalsinformation/

The International Opal Journal; Vol 1, No.1 Downunder; A Miner's Viewpoint By Archie Kalokerinos An Australian surgeon, Dr Kalokerinos has spent much time on the opal fields. Contact with the miners led him to his own successful endeavors at mining; his personal observations and unique writing skills have kindled several popular books on the subject. https://www.facebook.com/opalsinformation/
