Barmera, South Australia. 1943-12-31. As many Italian internees were released during 1943 it was decided to close No 9 Compound and transfer the remaining Italians to No 14D Compound in the Loveday Internment Camp Group. This photograph shows internees passing through the compound gates carrying their personal belongings including birds in cages.

Between 1942 and 1943 thousands of Italian aliens and Italian Americans are sent to internment camps, along with being arrested, excluded and generally harassed and discriminated against in the United States.
