A stunning effort, inspired by the Pinch of Salt Sponge recipe that Bow Hill show cook Margret Green kindly contributed to my first book.

Starting today I am planning to upload an image a day to celebrate the release of The Australian Blue Ribbon Cookbook on March 26. This wonderful photo of catering volunteers at the 1934 Cobargo Show, supplied by Ray Sawtell, appears on the title page along with a dedication to all the volunteers that help keep the tradition of country shows alive.

Day Six of my pre-launch pins, and a bit of nostalgia. This photo of a stand promoting a new stove was taken in 1970 at the Wangaratta show. It's featured in the book alongside Jess McMillan's recipe for streusel caramel slice.

I couldn't get there, but yesterday was show day in Blayney. Local show cook Tamara Miller shared with me her grandmother's wonderful ginger biscuit recipe. Joy Walkom passed away some time ago but her influence lives on through an encouragement award given in her memory. "There are things that she taught me that pop up in the back of my head when I am cooking, and I can almost hear her saying them," says Tamara.

A slightly unconventional rainbow cake created by one of the test cooks who volunteered to help test recipes for the book. Its not meant to have green icing, but try to tell her two wonderful boys that. Mighn't win the prize for rainbow cakes at the Rainbow Show in Victoria, but who's to say show judges are always right!

Last weekend I returned to my home town, Mt Gambier, to launch the book and talk about the challenges of collecting family recipes as part of the inaugural Rotary Book Fair. Casterton show cook Bettina Kent made a special trip with her Mum and daughter Violet to be there. To celebrate here is the photo of her amazing peanut butter swirl slice as featured in the cookbook

Another nostalgia shot - this time from the archives for the Hobart Show. And what could be more appropriate than a Cadbury show bag.

The work of another Ekka show cook to help celebrate the Brisbane launch. This beautiful petticoat tail shortbread is made according to a traditional Scottish method by Faye Solomon. The little blue flag was placed there by the stewards after judges gave it a blue ribbon in 2010.

To celebrate the fabulous launch of the book in Brisbane on March 26 here is one of Queensland's best show cooks, Geoff Beattie, from Lockyer Valley, and his suitcase of championship ribbons. Geoff was one of seven cooks who travelled into Brisbane for the event. Thanks Geoff!

Day Seven and time for a food pic. This is Roma Baxter's prize-winning oat shortbread slice. Roma and her husband Robert farm near Tambellup in the Great Southern region of WA where she has been competing for many years. "Once I get the schedule I just have to make something for the show," she says.
