It has become faddish over the last fifty years to understand additions as opportunities for juxtaposition, for compositional dialogues – sometimes very stark in their relationship. Our approach for this project was grounded in an understanding of the house’s lack of integrity, its lack of completeness, but also in potent remnants of its original conception – beautiful stucco walls and a period tile roof with charming bird mouthed rafter tails – key tenants of an architectural language that is synonymous with Los Angeles.
