The Manse Folk of Kirklands in Tasmania is believed to be the oldest manse in Australia still being used as a manse. Its narrow stairs, dormer windows with some panes obviously of blown glass, and a built-in school room all added to the feel of history. The manse is a comfortable compact old colonial house built in 1829 as manse and school for the Scottish settlers of the Macquarie River. It seems large to Australians, but 12-14 rooms was small by Scottish standards for manses.

The epic story of the shipwrecked crew & their heroic journey from Preservation Island to Port Jackson. In 1797, the merchant vessel Sydney Cove was on a voyage from Bengal, India to Port Jackson, New South Wales. Near the end of the trip, the ship floundered in Bass Strait on Preservation Island on the northern coast of Van Dieman's Land (Tasmania). The only hope of the surviving crew members was to send some of their number off in the ship's longboat to Port Jackson (now Sydney Harbour).

John & Ann Cox arrived at Port Jackson 4 years after the First Fleet. John was a soldier in the NSW Corps & Ann was a young convict. They both arrived on the convict transport Pitt. It would have been impossible to find out anything at all about the origins of John & Ann Cox if it were not for the existence of just one item, which has been passed down from generation to generation of their descendants. This item is a powder horn. On the powder horn are carved the birth records of his family.
