H is for Hawk - Helen Macdonald - a book about natural history. Beautifully written but required a great deal of concentration - a very interrogative book.

LaRose - Louise Erdrich - first book I saw in a bookstore The story opens with Landreux Iron's accidental shooting of his neighbour's five year old son. Calling on the traditions of their American Indian traditions, he and his wife give their own son, LaRose, to their grief stricken neighbours. The boy becomes a linchpin between the two families. A poignant story of healing that manages to avoid hokey. 5 stars.

A Greyhound of a Girl - Roddy Doyle - a book with alliteration in the title. Mary's grandmother is in hospital when an old fashioned woman, younger than her own mother, begins to appear on the walk home from school. Who is she and what connection does she have to her grandmother? I loved this gentle and touching middle school novella that celebrates the bonds of family and the entry into womanhood. 5 stars.

All the Bright Places - Jennifer Niven - a YA bestseller. Niven successfully takes the reader inside the minds of two very engaging characters. A sad but worthwhile read. Recommended for the older end of the YA market, requires a mental health trigger warning. 4 stars.

The Midnight Watch - David Dyer - a book published in 2016. A pacy, well written story of the Titanic written from the alternate viewpoints of an investigative journalist and the crew of the Californian, the ship that saw the Titanic's distress signals but did nothing. Loved it. 5 stars.

Friday Brown - Vikki Wakefield - met the author. A wonderfully powerful YA novel. Great characters & very good writing. Gripping and gritty. Good for HSC: Discovery; Representing People and Places; Transitions.
