The Ash Burner - Kari Gislason - set in NSW. A very sombre read. Beautifully written but more artful than true. 3 stars.

Islands in the Stream - Ernest Hemingway - set on an island. Although a little patchy in places, a good read with some very sensitive writing. I enjoyed the second half of the third part of the novel the most. 4 stars.

Friday Brown - Vikki Wakefield - met the author. A wonderfully powerful YA novel. Great characters & very good writing. Gripping and gritty. Good for HSC: Discovery; Representing People and Places; Transitions.

LaRose - Louise Erdrich - first book I saw in a bookstore The story opens with Landreux Iron's accidental shooting of his neighbour's five year old son. Calling on the traditions of their American Indian traditions, he and his wife give their own son, LaRose, to their grief stricken neighbours. The boy becomes a linchpin between the two families. A poignant story of healing that manages to avoid hokey. 5 stars.

Hemingway's Boat : Everything He Loved in Life, and Lost, 1934-1961 - Paul Hendrickson - more than 600 pages. His story is really terribly sad in the end.
