He moved to Australia and was a member of the ill-fated Burke and Wills expedition and died, along with his colleagues William Purcell and Charles Stone, at the expedition's camp on the western bank of Koorliatto Waterhole, Bulloo River in 1861.

Wills died alone at a place called Breerily Waterhole on Cooper Creek in South Australia. Burke died soon after.
