Black Japan on Hoop Pine Floor
Have an old Queenslander with Hoop Pine floors? Chances are, when you pull up your floor coverings you will find either a black border around the floors or total black coating over the floor. This is called Black Japan. After it is sanded off it can leave a two-tone colour effect. The best case scenario is to find a total black floor. This will avoid the lighter colour tone around the border when sanded. The colour variation is due to moisture/dirt penetrating into the bare timber area.
