Rocks in a bin as an alternative to sand. Trouble with play sand every time we use it as it gets all over the grass and kills it. Rocks or even beans in my son's water table would work better. I like this idea from Pink and Green Mama.

Rainbow rice: Place 4 cups dry rice in a Ziploc bag with about 2T of food coloring or liquid water colors (works great!) and 3 T of rubbing alcohol. Mix the rice in the bags to spread the color. Put them on pans to dry in the sun.
