In the early 1870s rich gold discoveries rapidly turned Hill End from a small rurul & mining community into one of the largest inland towns in NSW.Once the riches were taken from the goldfield,the town gradually reverted back to its former status.Today it provides us with the opportunity to explore what it was like to live and work in a major commercial centre in the late 1800s.This capture was taken at the Bald Hill Mine.NSW Australia.

Images of Australia: the Tyrrell Collection of photographs of Australias history. Blades and brawn. Skilled axemen prepare to fell a giant gum tree with the power of the axe alone. Great skill was required on the part of the axemen balancing several metres above the ground. Felled trees were then cut into smaller sections with crosscut saws ready to be hauled away by bullock teams.
