WOMPOO PIGEON (Ptilinopus magnificus) - one of the most magnificent fruit pigeons in the Wet Tropics of Australia. The unmistakable deep-throated call "wallop the blue" is often heard in the lowland and adjacent upland rainforest. It was once found from the tip of Cape York Peninsula to Illawarra in NSW, however due to loss of habitat it is now seldom seen in NSW.
Wilpena Pound, Flinders Range, South Australia. - the rugged and timeless region of the Flinders Ranges (named after the British explorer Matthew Flinders) has a colour and beauty all its own. Wilpena Pound was so named because early settlers considered it to be a natural barrier for animals i.e. a 'pound'. It is actually the caldera of an ancient volcano.
