Society having deep seated roots in racism, sexism, homophobia, ableism etc, its easy for writers to perpetuate prejudices we've been exposed to all our lives in our writing -unconsciously. Part one of this blog aims to help you evaluate your consciousness of a range of problematic representation, and to avoid perpetuating prejudice when writing marginalised identities you personally don't share.

If your characters and overall story structure are good to go, its time to check your writing is clear and engaging in each scene and line. Read on for a list of the main scene and line edit tips I’ve given fellow writers feedback on, as their critical reader.

Editing a Novel: Character Development Checklists
You’ve just finished the first draft of your novel; what now? First, I’d check the big picture. Does your main character and antagonist develop and do the stakes increase throughout? Do you have a fully rounded antagonist and secondary characters? Do you have realistic tension in relationships? Is each chapter earning its place in your story? And is the tone (relatively) consistent? This checklist will help you evaluate character development, arcs and story tension throughout your novel.
