Christmas 2013 - our view from the empty nest

Andrew and Liz have been empty nesters for fourteen months - the longest child free period of their entire marriage. They are pleased to report they are still both in the nest and, for the most, are part bumping along just fine. January 28th will see them celebrate their thirtieth wedding anniversary. They plan to mark the occasion with a holiday in Europe at some point during the new year.

Andrew and Liz's relocation to Coburg, has proven to be a one of the great decisions of their marriage. They love the grunge and character of Melbourne's inner north and its multiculturalism. Not to mention their downsized living accommodation. They've landed a great set of neighbours and are enjoying being part of the St Augustine's Anglican Church community. When not at work you will find them sweating at the gym, riding their bikes to a local market, or perusing the nearby cafes.

Liz will finish 2013 twelve and a half kilograms lighter than she started. This makes her an official Dukan Diet devotee. She has continued to re-write her novel, this year, and to work at the library. She has also taught a teach weekly Welsh class. Liz's mum, Linda, moved to Melbourne in August and Liz has been kept busy with the administrative side of the endeavour. But she has still found time to set up her own domain name (yes, very exciting). You'll find her at…

We have two unwritten rules in our Welsh class. Firstly, if you go to Wales you must send a postcard – preferably written in Welsh. On my first trip ‘home’ to Wales, I had only be…

Andrew took his fitness to a new level this year by completing his first marathon. He travelled to Europe a few times for work and stayed in some pretty iconic locations which basically means the day job is going fine too. Other highlights were doing a gig at Darebin music feast with his band Hourglass. Along with regular hiking, cycling, gym work and cafe breakfasts.

Naomi Priya completed a Certificate Three in Home and Personal Care this year. While searching for a permanent PCA position, she has taken a job in the kitchen of an aged care facility. She is managing fine though not a fan of the early mornings. Andrew and Liz bought her a bike to help with the station commute. She is particularly fond of her nephew, Charlie.

Charlie Andrew Corbett entered the world on the 11th of June, 2013 and what a delightful addition he has been to our family. Andrew and Liz have made a number of trips to Canberra to spend time with the newest Canberra Corbett. While there, Andrew always waxes lyrical about starting a second family while Liz remembers in vivid detail what it is like to live without spare time or solitude. Grandparenthood is definitely preferable from her point of view.

Phoebe and Andy have enjoyed another year of living in St Kilda. Phoebe continues to work for Sacred Heart Mission and Andy has added part time study to his work schedule. They love to shop at the local market and cook amazing gourmet meals. Phoebe joined the gym early in the year and Andy added kite-boarding to his list of hobbies.

Ness made an uber organised entry in to the world of parenting and Jack isn't complaining. So long as Charlie sleeps and eats, he is more than happy to go along with the regime. Ness is home with Charlie full-time at the moment (that's if you don't count early morning bootcamps and running a church small group). Jack takes Charlie swimming on Saturday mornings. 2014 will see them relocate to Brisbane where Jack will take up a position at Griffith University.

Seth and Monique married in January 2013 and to all appearances have relished their first year of marriage. Monique has continued to work at the Alfred hospital. Seth has worked in local government while studying a Master of Public Policy. He will take up a graduate position with the Victorian Government early in the new year. Seth and Monique have really taken to being Charlie's aunt and uncle. We've recommended they buy a puppy - and preferably soon. :-)
