Marius Goring (1912-1998) was known for his Powell & Pressburger films (The Spy in Black, A Matter of Life & Death, The Red Shoes & Ill Met by Moonlight) as well as his long and distinguished career on the stage, both in England & Europe (he spoke fluent German & French). He was also well known for the 1955 ITV TV series 'The Scarlet Pimpernel' playing Sir Percy Blakeney and as Professor John Hardy in the 1968-1976 BBC TV series 'The Expert'

This was Marius's first speaking role in only his second feature film. Although his role was uncredited, he speaks all his lines to the film's star, Charles Laughton, who plays the titular lead role of Rembrandt.
Marius looks very handsome in his 17th century costume and with his lovely wavy red gold hair worn longer. Wish it had been in colour! However, the black & white cinematography is beautiful in this film.

He tells Hall he can be released on signing an undertaking not to espouse anti-Nazi views in the future and not to speak of what he has seen in the camp. Hall refuses to sign or be silent. He condemns Fritz: "I denounce you in the name of God!" Fritz is stunned.
Fritz Gerte is the Stormtroop leader in the village of Altdorf where Pastor Hall and his daughter, Christine, live. The Stormtroopers are there to promote compliance to Nazi ideology and weed out any "undesirables" eg Jews, Communists, Socialists but Pastor Hall is resistant. Fritz falls for Christine and pressures her to become his girlfriend/mistress in exchange for protecting her father from imprisonment.
