All children need to see their identities positively reflected in books, but African-American children often don't. These titles can help "build confidence and instill pride in young African American readers."
Poetry- I put this book on my wish list because I feel it is important to highlight poetry from someone of a different race and for my students to be exposed to poetry from all different kind of people. Langston Hughes wrote poems about Civil Rights which can also be tied into a history lesson in the classroom as well.
