These two men are USSR nuclear physicists Igor Kurchatov and Andrei Sakharov. Kurchatov designed Stalin's first atomic bomb. Sakharov designed the USSR's first true TN bomb in 1955, and later built Tsar Bomba in 1961. Being in charge of Tsar Bomba's construction, Andrei Sakharov was the man who made the decision decrease the bomb's yield by changing at least 1 of the 2 fusion tampers to Lead instead of Uranium 238. This, in turn, decreased the amount of fast fissioning in the fusion stages.
Andrei Sakharov. The man who created the hydrogen bomb in the 1950s became one of the biggest critics of the Soviet Union by the 1970s. He challenged an empire - and paid for it - by being publicly attacked, exiled, physically & psychologically tortured. A great man, one I will always look up to.
