Sweet and Sour Sauce 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 cup ketchup 1/2 cup white vinegar 1/2 cup water (you can substitute pineapple juice for the water, if desired)  Whisk all ingredients together in a small saucepan and simmer over medium heat until thickened, stirring occasionally, about 30 minutes.

Continue to cook for 5 minutes in boil. Cover and reduce to low heat. Simmer until rice is tender (about 15 minutes). Turn off the heat, uncover the pot and let stand 10 minutes.

LA Times Recipe  1 ½ ounces vodka  3/4 ounce pear purée (I use baby food)  1/2 ounce simple syrup  Juice of ½ lime (about ¾ ounce)  1/2 ounce ginger liqueur ( Domaine de Canton)  Sliced pear, for garnish    Into a cocktail shaker with ice, pour the vodka, pear purée, simple syrup, lime juice and ginger liqueur. Shake, then strain into a martini glass. Garnish with pear slices.
