Mar 27 - 1977 – Tenerife airport disaster: Two Boeing 747 airliners collide on a foggy runway on Tenerife in the Canary Islands, killing 583 (all 248 on KLM and 335 on Pan Am). 61 survived on the Pan Am flight. This is the worst aviation accident in history.
On 25 May 1979, American Airlines Flight 191, following improper maintenance and the loss of an engine, a McDonnell Douglas DC-10-10, lost control and crashed near O'Hare International Airport in Des Plaines, Illinois. The crash killed all 271 passengers and crew on board, as well as two people on the ground. It remains the deadliest commercial aircraft accident in the United States history, and was also the country's deadliest aviation disaster until the September 11 attacks in 2001.
TransAsia Airways Flight 235. February 4, 2015. Taipei, Taiwan. The ATR 72-600 takes-off from Songsham Airport with 53 passengers and 5 crew. Two minutes later the pilots report engine flameout, and the plane banks sharply to the left, drops from 1,500 feet, clips the Huandong Viaduct (and a taxi), and crashes into the Keelung River killing 43 aboard. The 15 survivors are all injured (2 others are injured on the bridge).
