The 100 million Bagger 288 (Excavator 288), built by the German company Krupp (now ThyssenKrupp) for the energy and mining firm Rheinbraun, is a bucket-wheel excavator or mobile strip mining machine. When its construction was completed in 1978, Bagger 288 superseded NASA’s Crawler-Transporter, used to carry the Space Shuttle and Apollo Saturn V launch vehicle, as the largest land vehicle in the world.
Digging Machine In the spirit of weird tools that you don’t see everyday, this behemoth is king of the list – the largest digging machine in the world. Built in Germany, this amazing structure is approximately 2 ½ football fields long and can move more than 76,000 cubic meters of earth in a day. You definitely won’t find anything like it in your toolbox.
Most people associate the brand Krupps with tiny coffeemakers. But a larger German conglomerate called Krupp has built something way bigger: the Bagger 288, a ginormous excavator that is technically the world’s largest land vehicle. The towering Bagger stands some 311 feet tall, is 705 feet long and weighs 45,500 tons. The world’s previously largest land vehicle, the puny 26-foot-tall platform NASA used to tow the Space Shuttle from one cancellation to another, pales in comparison.
