Jan. 8, 1815. U.S. forces led by General Andrew Jackson defeat the British in the Battle of New Orleans, the closing battle of the War of 1812.

The Battle of New Orleans took place on January 8, 1815 and was the final major battle of the War of 1812. American forces, commanded by Major General Andrew Jackson, defeated an invading British Army intent on seizing New Orleans and the vast territory the United States had acquired with the Louisiana Purchase.

CSS Louisiana, one of the "Misssissippi Monsters". She was suffering from engine troubles at the Battle of New Orleans and spent her time as a floating battery. She was burned to prevent capture when New Orleans fell.

WAR OF 1812 and the BATTLE OF NEW ORLEANS....the story wouldn't be complete without mentioning the Ursuline Nuns who, like everyone else in New Orleans expected defeat at the hands of the massive British forces. All night they prayed for a better outcome for America and their city. When the Americans were victorious, General Jackson personally went and thanked the nuns for praying.
