The Battle of New Orleans took place on January 8, 1815 and was the final major battle of the War of 1812. American forces, commanded by Major General Andrew Jackson, defeated an invading British Army intent on seizing New Orleans and the vast territory the United States had acquired with the Louisiana Purchase.

On the night of Dec 23, 1814 Jackson lead a three pronged assault in the evening fog . Jackson allegedly exclaimed , "By the Eternal they shall not sleep on our soil." A vicious hand to hand night battle ensued in the open fields and woods , part of which involved a flanking attack by Coffee's Tennessee Militia which is depicted here.
