Georges Cuvier first described this species in 1823 from part of a skull found in France in 1804. He thought it represented an extinct species — it wasn't until the 1870s that it was realized the type specimen represented a living species.

When it comes to diving deep, Cuvier's beaked whales lead the pack. In a study published in March scientists tracked these typically elusive whales.

Elusive Whales Set New Record for Depth and Length of Dives Among Mammals A new study of elusive Cuvier's beaked whales shows they can dive to nearly 10,000 feet (3,000 meters). By Jane J. Lee, National Geographic

Cuvier's beaked whales are likely to be the most extreme breath-holders among marine mammals. A satellite tag attached to one of these animals, swimming off the coast of California, recorded a dive to nearly 3km below the ocean surface that lasted 137 minutes.
