The great-great-grandchild of slaves, Frances Rice spent her formative years in poverty in the segregated South. She suffered personally from discrimination in the Democrat-controlled South and participated in civil rights protests in high school. Over the years, she pulled herself out of poverty to earn a BS, an MBA, and a JD. In 2005, she became a co-founder and Chairman of the National Black Republican Association.
The black Republican in modern politics is most often depicted either as a traitor to be scorned or misguided. Those sweeping generalizations miss an incredibly complex, and historic story.
