Tora! Tora! Tora! The film that took a balanced view of America’s great war shock, made at a time when America wasn’t ready for it.
Tora! Tora! Tora! is a 1970 Japanese-American coproduction depicting the events that led up to the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. Filmed in an era when WWII movies still largely tended to portray Axis combatants as irredeemably evil caricatures, this film was unique in its impartial depiction of Japanese characters, and the attempt to show their side of the story. Perhaps as a result, at its initial release the movie flopped in the US, but was a hit in Japan.
