US Coast Guard Cutter MESQUITE (WLB-305) - rather a black mark on the Coast Guard's reputation, the Mesquite is a good reminder not to let anything become routine. In December 4, 1989, the Mesquite grounded on a reef off the Keeweenaw Peninsula in Lake Superior, ironically, it was there to replace the navigational buoy that marked that very reef. After several hours of trying to free the vessel, the crew reluctantly abandoned ship. Semper Paratus...?
