Snookum Bear - Coati Arenal Area, Costa Rica Coatis are also known as Coatimundi, Brazilian Aardvarks, Mexican Tejón or Moncún, Hog-Nosed Coons, Pizotes, Panamanian Gatosolos, Crackoons and Snookum Bears and they are members of the raccoon family (Procyonidae). They are diurnal mammals native to South America, Central America, and South-Western North America.
White-nosed Coati ~ Coatimundi Pizote (Nasua narica) a species of coati and member of the family Procyonidae. Averaging about 8.8-13.2 lbs, males are much larger than females who may weigh as little as 5.5 lbs while large males may be 27 lbs. Body length about 43", half of that being tail. They eat small vertebrates, fruits, carrion, insects, and eggs. They can climb trees easily but are most often seen on the ground, and (unlike nocturnal raccoons) in the daytime.
