DIY Cold-Sore Remedy Household items Mix about 4-5 drops of any kind of Vodka with enough Baking Soda to make a creamy paste. Put the paste on your cold sore with a utensil such as a plastic knife for easy smooth application. Layer as thick as you can. Leave on for about 15 minutes, then wipe off mixture completely and go and reapply your mixture again so that you get a fresh batch of alcohol on your lip to make sure it's working. Do this about 3-4 times
