This statue of a Civil War soldier was ordered in 1912 to stand on the Limestone County Courthouse lawn. However, many residents thought its bowed head looked too defeated so it was moved to Athens City Cemetery, where it overlooks markers of the Civil War dead. A new statue was ordered for the courthouse where it remains today.
