(Note: I have gone to all-container gardening in my drought-ridden Central Coast backyard! With water restrictions in place, it just doesn't make sense to spray water in the sand and hope the plants survive. Beans, beets, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, corn, cucumbers and strawberries make good neighbors -- as long as you plant the onions, garlic, leeks and shallots elsewhere. Peppers do well with carrots, eggplant, onions, parsley and tomatoes, but not with kohlrabi. Keep lettuce away from cabbage and keep onions away from asparagus, beans and peas.
