North American tectonics during the Early Cretaceous (125 Ma) Two large arms of the rising sea are about to converge, held up temporarily by tectonic barriers such as the Trans-Continental Arch and the Ouachita Uplift. Ocean basins, inherently deeper, are designated as dark blue: whereas, shallow epicontinental (epeiric) basins and continental shelves are light blue. A marine animal known as a crinoid (foreground), which is related to sea urchins, takes up residence on pink bubblegum coral (Paragorgia arborea) hundreds of feet underwater in Norfolk Canyon off the coast of Virginia. These are the most common corals in the underwater canyons of the Mid-Atlantic Bight, the long, gradual bend in the shoreline and continental shelf from southern New England to Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.

Kealakeakua Bay. The continental shelf drops a fair amount about 50 yards off the coastline, but this is by far one of the best snorkeling spots I've been to. We saw so many varieties of fish, not much by way of pretty coral, but our highlight? Dolphins! Live, playful dolphins.

The walrus (Odobenus rosmarus) is a large flippered marine mammal with prominent tusks, whiskers, and bulkiness. Adult males in the Pacific can weigh more than 3,700 lb and, among pinnipeds, are exceeded in size only by the two species of elephant seals. Walruses live mostly in shallow waters above the continental shelves, spending significant amounts of their lives on the sea ice looking for benthic bivalve mollusks to eat.
