March 7, 2014. Ireland's Wild Atlantic Way. Photograph by Kevin Galvin, Alamy. A stone cottage stands sentinel on the coast of Achill Island in County Mayo, Ireland. Mayo's rugged coastline is part of the Wild Atlantic Way scenic route, which covers 1,491 miles of Ireland's untamed western coast and is among our travel editors' picks for the Best Spring Trips of 2014.
Mayo, Ireland Photographers note -The village was deserted during the Irish Potato Famine. The stone walls of the houses are still there but the straw roofs are long gone. Very interesting, beautiful, sad place.
