¡Viva Cristo Rey! (Long live Christ the King) were the last words Father Pro uttered before he was executed for being a Catholic priest and serving his flock. He served a Church forced to go "underground" in Mexico, celebrated the Eucharist and ministered the other sacraments clandestinely. Pro's arrest, lack of trial, and execution gained prominence during the Cristero War. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II as a Catholic martyr in odium fidei (in hatred of the faith) in 1988.
