Crushed granite has a finer texture than gravel. Often called “decomposed granite,” the small pieces compact more smoothly than coarse gravel, although both materials are packed the same way. Packing or tamping helps crushed granite settle more densely than loosely laid material, which results in a firmer path, driveway or patio. Where the granite is poured over a gravel substrate, dampen the gravel with water before compacting it.
A half-inch of decomposed granite over a compacted base forms a firm clean surface that drains well when summer rains drench this garden in Rancho Mirage, CA. The path's flagstone-edged irregular shape slows visitors down enough to enjoy the yellow-flowering palo verde, agaves, opuntia and cactus. Michael Buccino http://www.mbuccino.com
