1854, rare daguerreotype in which the subjects are smiling. These pictures took so long to capture that the people sitting were usually told not to smile because their facial muscles wouldn't be able to hold the expression that long, blurring the picture. (That's also why babies, like the one here, tend to look a bit fuzzy and surreal. You try to keep an infant still that long!)
