Doris Duke ~ Doris Duke (November 22, 1912 – October 28, 1993) was an American heiress, horticulturalist, art collector, and philanthropist. Daughter of an immensely wealthy tobacco tycoon, Duke was able to fund a life of global travel and wide-ranging interests. These extended across journalism, competition surfing, jazz piano, wildlife conservation, Oriental art and Hare Krishna.
Rough Point in Newport, Rhode Island was the home of tobacco heiress Doris Duke. The English Manorial style home was designed by architectural firm Peabody & Stearns for Frederick William Vanderbilt and was completed in 1892. In 1922 James Duke purchased Rough Point and renovated the home and added two new wings. Doris Duke inherited the house in 1925 upon her father's death. Doris Duke passed away in 1993 and the the home is currently owned by Newport Restoration Foundation.
