The three ossicles of the middle ear are called the malleus, incus, and stapes. The malleus, also known as the “hammer,” is one of the three bones that make up the inner or middle ear. It is the first bone of the middle ear and is closest to the ear drum and outer ear.The malleus is shaped like a hammer and this ossicle connects to the eardrum (outward side) and to the incus (inward side).Interestingly, the word malleus is latin for hammer. The primary function of the malleus is the…

Eardrum-- or Tympanic Membrane, is a thin, cone-shaped membrane that separates the external ear from the middle ear in humans and other tetrapods. Its function is to transmit sound from the air to the ossicles inside the middle ear, and then to the oval window in the fluid-filled cochlea. Hence, it ultimately converts and amplifies vibration in air to vibration in fluid. The malleus bone bridges the gap between the eardrum and the other ossicles.

A tympanogram can assess eardrum and middle ear function and help detect fluid in the ear or infection. It is an important diagnostic test and may be used to provide medical clearance for hearing aids.

00126: Anesthesia for procedures on external, middle, and inner ear including biopsy: TYMPANOTOMY. (Defined as a surgical procedure to open the tympanic membrane (eardrum) and remove fluid, such as blood, pus, and/or water, from the middle ear. The fluid is typically caused by Eustachian tube function impairment (drainage function), infection or allergy. Also called a Myringotomy.)

Ceruminous glands are only found in the external ear. Their secretion combines with sebum and dead epidermal cells to form earwax, also known as cerumen. Cerumen functions in the pliability of the eardrum, waterproofing the canal, killing bacteria and enhancing the function of guard hairs by making them sticky to catch foreign particles.

Ear anatomy. Computer artwork showing a human outer ear (centre) and eardrum (right). The outer ear consists of the pinna (large, centre) and the ear canal (external auditory meatus, centre right), which leads to the eardrum. The eardrum, or tympanic membrane, is a thin membrane that separates the outer ear from the middle ear. It's function is to transmit sound from the air to the ossicles (bones) inside the middle ear.
