Tip of the Day: Fire extinguishers come in types A, B, or C, depending on the fires they’re meant to fight. Class A is burning ordinary materials like wood and paper; class B is for flames fed by grease or oil, and class C is for electrical fires. Your best bet is probably a multipurpose A-B-C extinguisher. Look for a rechargeable one with a pressure gauge that’s easy to read, and hang it near a doorway or other escape route.
HowStuffWorks "How Smoke Detectors Work" - Description of Photoelectric vs. Ionization detectors - each detects different types of fires. Just watched an NBC story saying that it's best to have BOTH types of detectors; photoelectric for long slow smolders (often deadly night fires) and the ionization for fast fires. They said photoelectric or combo are more expensive, but we MUST get some!
