The earliest known turtles date from 220 million years ago, making them one of the oldest reptile groups, more ancient than lizards, snakes or crocodiles. Many species alive today are endangered. Turtles are ectotherms- their internal temperature varies according to the environment (cold-blooded). They are amniotes, along with other reptiles, mammals and birds. Like other amniotes, turtles breathe air and don't lay eggs underwater, tho many species live in or near water.
