Day 348 Today's a Great Day to acknowledge Waitangi Day in New Zealand. At this very Marae (meeting house) and grounds in 1840 a document was signed that made New Zealand a part of the British Empire, guaranteeing Māori rights to their land and gave Māori the rights of British subjects. Because of a difference in translation between the Maori and English version, this has led to debate over exactly what was agreed to at Waitangi.

By the end of the year over 500 Māori rangatira had signed the Treaty.
