She developed Black Studies courses at SFSU and taught at Temple University from 1977 until her retirement in 1999. In addition to 18 books of poetry she has published plays, children's books and anthologies. She has been awarded the PEN writing award, Pew Fellowship and NEA Fellowship. #TodayInBlackHistory
