Summative vs. Formative Assessments What’s the difference, anyway? Some like to think of the two as helping one another out – the formative assessments check progress along the way, while the summative assessment serves sort of as the ‘end survey’. While that works as a simplified explanation, there’s much more to it.
Help students self-assess their proficiency. Using standards-based grading of 1, 2, 3, 4....Novice = 1, Apprentice = 2, Practitioner = 3, Expert = 4. Teachers can check for understanding before, during, and after a lesson asking students to provide a number self-assessment.

It explains the teacher's role and the student's role in assessment. This is good to learn how to use multiple types of assessments to meet the needs of your learners.
