John Coltrane, American jazz saxophonist & composter. Working in the bebop & hard bop idioms early in his career, he helped pioneer the use of modes in jazz and later was at the forefront of free jazz. He is known for his work with trumpeter Miles Davis & pianist Thelonious Monk. He influenced innumerable musicians, and remains one of the most significant saxophonists in jazz history. His A Love Supreme is often listed among the greatest jazz albums of all time. R.I.P.
