1895: After being referred to variously as the Wolverines and the Creams, Detroit's team is dubbed the Tigers in articles appearing in the Detroit Free Press. "Tigers" most likely is borrowed from the nickname given to the Detroit Light Guard, a militia unit that had been the city's pride and joy since the Civil War. The team officially adopts the name upon entry into the American League in 1901.
